Festival of Monkey God… Closer To Home

19 09 2007

The tale of the Monkey God is a common story told when I was in Chinese school. It had something to do with how Sun Wu Kong (Monkey) went to recover the Buddhist religious texts with the help of other characters like Zhu Ba jie, a monk (I forgot his name) and others. All I can remember of that story was about their journey in finding the scriptures and how the Sun Wu Kong always got in trouble.

So why am I talking about this out of the blue? Well according to what M Hidayat posted, the Monkey God is immortalised in a Jurong Tree. The following pictures are taken from M Hidayat from wacky Singapore dot com and jabberwocker from hardware zone.

I walked there tonight to see what was all the hoo ha. Okay I admit I was being nosey too. Hey it’s a lot of dilemma since all I hear is cars blasting their horns from morning till night and I was late for school because of these people. And let me tell you it was as much people there at night as was seen in M Hidayat posted pictures of the crowd in the morning / afternoon!

There were lots of people praying, burning incense, giving offerings. Mind you the Birthday of the Monkey God is like in 2 weeks around the 26th of September. What a coincidence that the monkey god has appeared at the foot of the tree when the car drove into it causing the outer bark to break and TA DAA MONKEY APPEARS AT THE FOOT OF THE TREE.

It was in the papers of Wan Bao according to jabberwocker and jabberwocker was nice enough to post the following headline picture up to share with the rest of the world.

I showed it to S and she said she can’t see the monkey. But she said she could see the banana and she couldn’t see the monkey. Can you see the monkey? There’s actually two monkeys. Can you see it? *Waves my hands in the air and points to the picture*

I couldn’t take any photos of it because my father is rather superstitious. He believes that if we take photos of the monkey god, it will follow us home so we shouldn’t. Then he continues to explain why that is the reason why people give offerings and pray to it.

I know there are many inexplicable things that happen and seriously right, I don’t want to challenge any immortal gods at the moment or in the near future or in the far future… EVER.

So readers. Can you see it? How can you not see it? Okay maybe because it was a newspaper clipping. So then I thought maybe it could be seen clearer from M Hidayat’s other picture he posted of the tree since the picture had more higher megapixels and was brighter.

S still couldn’t see it. Can you see it? There is one big monkey on the right and one small monkey on the left. See the big monkey with a cheeky smile?

See all the fruits, peanuts the people have offered to the tree monkey king? I don’t have a clue what the chinese wording says though… hm… my mom went to see in the morning and told me it had something to do with 4D numbers. *grinz*

Amazing right? IT REALLY LOOKS LIKE THE MONKEY. I can’t be sure if it’s the monkey king but THERE’S A MONKEY ON THE TREE!! Tell me you see it!! Oh wells, S couldn’t see it so I drew an outline picture for her.

Yes keep on laughing at my attempt of arty fartyness. *Gives evils* You evil people… DOUBLE KARMA POINTS FOR LAUGHING AT MY ATTEMPTS TO HELP YOU ALL SEE THE MONKEY I SEE!! *Cries* ekekek I even drew the 2 dots as the nostrils for you to see… Didn’t want to ruin the photo by drawing the rest like the eyes and the wide mouth but I wanted to let your imagination eyes see the rest of the picture for yourself.

I can’t help but wonder if this is all a conspiracy though. How convenient Monkey King’s Birthday is so near. How convenient that a few metres away is a Taoist temple. How convenient that the appearance of the monkey to me looks like it has been engraved onto the base of the tree trunk. Maybe I have been watching too many mystery shows lately and this is really as it is. Bizarre and spooky…
